It's 1888. Amsterdam violin maker Walter Vedder reads in the newspaper that a large hotel is to be built on the site of his house. Around the same time, his cousin, Hoogeveen pharmacist Anijs, decides to shift his ambition from medicine to humanity. Peat cutters suffer from abject poverty and would be better off in a new country, preferably America. But that emigration costs a fortune—exactly the amount Vedder believes he can command for his house. From that moment on, both men become embroiled in a harrowing adventure.
