Fourteen-year-old Mona is unlike any other magician defending the city. She can’t control lightning or talk to water. When Mona opens the bakery one morning and finds a dead body, her life takes a dark turn. A killer is stalking the streets, and it seems Mona is his next target. But when a series of bizarre events puts her in charge of defending the city from military attack—with the help of her loyal gingerbread men and the grumpy sourdough starter Bob, of course—it soon becomes apparent that the killer isn’t Mona’s biggest problem.
