Bloedgeld
AMSTERDAM, 1653. Reinout van Veghel is released early from prison when he signs on a ship of the Dutch East India Company to Java. He soon becomes a full-fledged shipmate, accustomed to the harsh life on board the Hollandia.
Because the captain wants to complete the journey as quickly as possible, he decides not to go ashore for fresh water and food on the way – with the result that the crew gets scurvy due to the lack of vitamins. At that moment, Reinout makes a decision: this ship requires a new captain.
In sharp, realistic descriptions, Simone van der Vlugt tells about the harsh life at the bottom of society in seventeenth-century Amsterdam.
