Kees De Jongen
This is undoubtedly Thijssen's most famous novel. Kees Bakels, almost 12 years old, is a cobbler's son from Amsterdam's Jordaan district. Despite all the adversity—his father's illness and death, and his family's subsequent decline into poverty—he manages to survive by daydreaming about what could have been. Many of these rosy, yet sometimes also gloomy, fantasies concern his secretly desired classmate, Rosa Overbeek.
